sort of blog
#1
this is basically my blog of small things. big things get their own threads

lately i've noticed my sister using words she doesn't understand. she keeps adding 'generally' to things in the wrong context. and she keeps saying stuff is 'ironic' when it actually isn't. generally, i'd find these happenings ironic but it's just getting irritating. i think she just hears new words and attempts to pronounce them right, no matter what impact it'll make on the conversation. earlier today i was ranting about my internet connection not working and she said 'is the ectoplasm plugged in?'

'ectoplasm. what?'

'is it plugged in?'

'what is ectoplasm?' (i happen to know it's the material 'ghosts' are supposedly made from)

'you know, it's beside the router. it's in cytoplasm.'

'are you fucking serious.'

'you generally use that phrase a lot.'

my sister is nearly 14 and i thought i was stupid when i was 14. she makes me look like da vinci in comparison.

and that was a real conversation. i kid you not

Did you then kick a football at her very hard?

no but she did try to tackle me, end up kicking me in the shin with her bare foot and emit and shriek as she realised this hurt her more than me

Hahaha. But back on the subject I think we all over exaggerate how stupid we where when we where younger. For example, when I was 6/7 I couldn't imagine how I managed to navigate through those caves, catch the legendary's, or even how to use the Pokeballs in general in G/S. It's interesting how we compare our past selves so lowly.

well when i was fourteen i was admining pokecosmo and being a child prodigy so i wouldn't consider myself 'stupid', i just made some really ridiculous judgement errors. but she does all the things i hated people doing when i was fourteen, like inputting her opinion in a debate without knowing what the fuck she's talking about. it got so bad once when we were talking about liberalism that i had to say in front of my grandparents that her pseudo intellectualism isn't welcome at the table and then i stormed off dramatically. my parents say 'oh leave her she's younger than you'. so what? am i meant to just say 'yeah i guess i was just exceptionally well educated and cultured when i was fourteen' and let her shame my family name just to look nice? that's retarded.

sometimes i wonder about whether i'd be able to keep a forum alive and sustained. the brief times i've been in charge of forums have all had exceptions to my ponders until they died.

let's look at the first forum i was ever staff on; indigo plateau forums. i was admin along with this chap called soulless. i was an internet newbie but i quickly realised that teenagers want power and they want it badly so we promised moderatorship for whoever joined. the forum lasted a week and then we stopped handing out staff positions. the forum was dead 48 hours later.

pokecosmo is a funny one because i was the only one who knew we were working with borrowed time. yeah, i told everyone cronus wasn't as bad as everyone though, but in reality i knew when he'd come back, we'd be screwed. it was a mixture of nocturne's presence and the fact that i absolutely tore his forum apart. what kept cosmo going was also staff positions. there were only five active posters who didn't have staff positions, and they wanted them badly. the members of staff like sydian or omega saikon wouldn't have bothered sticking around if they weren't members of staff. the really intriguing thing here is that nobody except me actually used their powers. so was everyone really really superficial or did they actually care about pokecosmo to some extent?

aorio hoshi. fucking failure no matter which way you look at it. only active members were those who were staff, that was it. everyone else just dropped off gradually after it became obvious that jen was going to let us down by not keeping her promises.

vglan. wasn't in charge but pretty much had a de facto rule over the forum. vglan was kept alive by smbz fanboys, the spam forum where you could talk about anything and the arguments that kept happening. the staff did little and as a result, people just wanted more fighting and freedom. then it was shut down after the apathetic movement.

twisty. same story that's going to happen here. it will be active for the first week, then people will stop posting and it'll just die. as much as people hate having to abide by rules on a forum like pokecommunity, that's what keeps a forum going. when it's a free for all like it is here (and i really hope there's no members of staff after luke finishes the skin), nobody can deal with it because that's not according to plan. people need rules to stay in line. without it, forums become colossal circlejerks of faggotry.

this forum. i'm going for a new approach. no staff members at all so long as we can have a skin. just let everyone do whatever the hell they want with no consequences other than people shouting at them. i can hang out with friends in real life. when they get out of hand i dont call the police, i just tell them to shut the fuck up. we should be able to do the same here. but its success doesnt depend on me constantly posting. that's why the old twisty fell down so hard when i disappeared. it needs to be all of us, getting new guys to join, being open to new members and just constantly posting. unless i can see everyone do that, the drive to see this forum do well is going to dwindle gradually until i just stop posting.

maybe i just like telling myself there's patterns to see, but i'm pretty sure there's one here for real.

Are you actually looking for some sort of opinion or do you just want to inform us?

But anyway, commenting on the first issue. I would simply put it down to the fact that some people are just exceptional at that age, or you might just have a biased opinion of yourself, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you actually were smarter than the average 14 year old. You seem like the type anyway. Regardless, once at that age people start learning about opinions and will open their mouth to give theirs at any oppurtunity they can get. But you came in with the 'are you fucking serious.' remark too soon, you're supposed to demolish their point with your superior knowledge first, then once they try and disagree with your statement in a blind confusion, you then retaliate with 'are you fucking serious.' It usually makes them feel stupider (if you're lucky, they'll rethink what they said, but it's unlikely)

My brother is also coming up to 14 and he is always certain he is right. Reasoning with him properly actually works most of the time, but it takes too much time and effort to explain it to him well enough so he can wrap his head around it. So I usually just mock him because it has the funniest results. Anyway, good luck with that. I expect sisters are more frustrating than brothers anyway.

As for the second, I have little experience with this so can't offer much opinion. The key is getting a lot of active members, because if a forum is active, it's interesting, and people want to keep coming back here. The most annoying part is people stop coming back because they say "oh it's not very active" and it just ends up dying. It's tought to get a forum decent and active. It's not really that you're running incorrectly or anything, I think. Just invite as many people as possible and try and make the forum interesting enough for them to stay. You've done well making threads to raise activity though. I'll try and remain active. I like the idea of not having rules and staff, makes it more fun, unlike other forums, such as, idk, POKECOMMUNITY.

i've mostly figured out that the three most important things to making an active community are:

- having a staff team. this way the staff stay online and post and power hungry teenagers stay online and post to become staff

- having a website. take serebii or unexplained mysteries. these forums have millions of posts because of the successful websites

- having a nice community

goddamn parents are back will post more later

True. But then you get a forum full of faggots and I'd rather post on a forum like this one with only a handful of members than a giant forum full of power-hungry retards.

so continuing on...

having a staff team can often result in faggotry. when i was actually part of a valid staff team on aorio hoshi where everyone's word was equal (as opposed to cosmo where it was a dictatorship) the entire staff forums were just filled with arguments. meanwhile you have pathetic members who have no authority in real life who want to exercise some online practically begging the staff to let him into the staffly circle. this isn't right. i've seen people degrade and demoralise themselves to godforsaken grounds just to get approval from people they wouldn't otherwise talk to if they weren't staff. it's pathetic.

and because the diehard faggots die hard, the guys who should get staffed never do. it's just wrong. but it constitutes an active forum so nobody changes it.

i don't want to own a website. i wouldn't be able to maintain it. i don't want to be affiliated with one either because then someone would get admin powers and this is meant to be a NO STAFF ZONE. this means we don't get a lot of traffic but it also complicates things because if i won't even go as far as let someone have access to the acp, will i be able to let someone purchase vbulletin. whoever gets the license will have root administration forever. i don't want that, which means we could be stuck with free forum software for several years.

having a nice community is the worst. you have a bunch of kids spraying XDDD around the place, not contributing to anything but their egos for self-validation. i'm just going to say it now that this community is mediocre. i'm not nice to newbies. i poke fun at everyone and newbies very rarely catch onto that. then you have people like ascaris or faltzer who don't want cliques and try to drive out newbies they don't think are up to the challenge. then you have justin and teku and jericho and celery and retro bug who make the place look like a giant circlejerk. the only members that make this place look even remotely okay to someone who's never seen us before are vendak and

i can't even think of someone else. would have said teku but you guys blew that msn remark out of proportion big time. that was disappointing.

so basically this forum is a massive experiment. can we walk away from the three primary factors that keep a forum alive and keep this one alive? right now activity is dwindling and this forum is going into cardiac arrest. you guys mightn't be able to see it but i can. we need posters who post lots and we need posters like vendak who raise the quality of posts. you can't try to be both you've gotta choose one for this to work.

even then, the chances of this succeeding is miniscule. i would like to have maybe thirty - forty active members. we have about a quarter of that now and that's not bad for 72 hours work, but if you guys want this to work, you've gotta work too. not just by posting, but by finding good posters and getting them to post. and when they don't post, you put the pressure on. that's what i've been doing with faltzer and vendak.

the early days are the worst for any forum. if you guys want this to be a place to chill and you want it to prevail, you'll stop spamming links to it via msn and you'll pick out somebody. i don't mind who, so long as you can get him/her posting and so long as that person in a cool cat.

it's not that hard. if i can do it, you can. it's our roles, not mine and ascaris, because me and ascaris won't be staff for much longer. i'm just waiting for luke to finish the skin and when he does i'm de-admining everyone regardless of what ascaris wants. this is a freeland and it will stay that way

how do i make the place look like a 'huge circlejerk'?

i am involved in it as well. we post as if we've known each other for years which we have which means we need other posters to make the place look more anonymous. having a poster with the username of ANONYMOUS in big capitals would be super effective

haha it doesn't matter though, that obviously means i'm not a cool cat and shouldn't be posting here.
