my music tastes are weird.
i know ive given off the impression to certain people that im extremely critical of mainstream pop, hip-hop, etc and dont dare listen of any of them but instead choose to listen to obscure, indie bands that no one likes because theyre obscure and indie. its only half true. i do criticise a lot of the radio music airplayed to no end. its because of the simple reason that most of it really is shit, and by shit i mean takes little to no talent to produce. im sure if i had the same resources half of those wannabes do i would produce a billboard top ten song once in two hours; its really easy composing a catchy melody, writing lyrics about sex, parties and broken hearts, layering generic pop beats, singing drunk and auto-tuning it till the drunkenness is severely compounded. easy.
the second thing i hate about the songs played by the radio is that they get old. theyre replaceable. you hear one song, think it is the shit, propagate it to the point where everyone's talking about it and then a week later a new song comes out and the cycle repeats. which is pretty retarded and pretty much kills the chances of anyone calling this shit good music, because good music doesnt stop being good after a few days so that something else can take its place.
i dont mean to say that all the songs played on the radio are shit, just the ones that are specifically geared for radio airplay because their makers know that no one would give a shit about them anywhere else. then there are other songs which are good, but just because they are good are overhyped to the point where they are showered with grammy awards and then receive their coveted place on the radio playlist alongside the shit songs and shittier artists mentioned earlier. its a vicious cycle really, happens all the time now and there really isnt anything you can do about it.
but im not cynical to the point where i cant enjoy songs which i deem as not good enough. i have a lot of guilty pleasures even by artists ive sworn to hate till eternity. like lady gaga perhaps. the only think that separates these songs from the songs which i enjoy because they are good is that like they do on the radio they get really old really fast. so i listen to them for a couple of days, song sticks in my head, i hum the tune from time to time and then the point of time comes where its totally worn out such that i cant even listen to it anymore. so i skip it everytime i come across it on shuffle and probably eventually delete it and never listen to it again.
but a few, very few manage to stick. songs like numb by linkin park. its absolutely generic RELATIVE to every one of the songs theyve ever made and the chester dude cant sing for shit but that song made set up who linkin park was for me three years ago when i used to think they were the greatest band ever. then i grew up, but i still enjoy listening to that song. and possibly my favourite song of all time would be im yours by jason mraz. its a perfectly ordinary feel good pop song. but even after years i can still play the song while im feeling a little depressed and it can still lift up my spirits.
a lot of people are surprised when i tell them this because they expect my favourite song to be neutron star by the slithering snakes or some shit theyve never heard of. i kinda like that quality of me: the fact that i can enjoy watching, listening to or reading something yet can still tell objectively how good it really is. i have no limits this way.
but even so i dont dig deep to find 'underground music' that i enjoy. if you pull a random indie band out of your ass and ask me what i think of them, i wont have an opinion. all the songs i listen to ive either found MAINSTREAM or has been suggested to me. is either because im too lazy to actually go through tons of obscure artists and figure out who i like best or because, even though i only share with you my opinion on the english music industry, i actively listen to music across three to four different languages. i dont have the time or the incentive to search for 'alternative' music. i scratch the surface of mainstream, take what i want from it and move on. i have about a 1200 songs in my library spanning english, hindi, arabic and telugu... more than enough for me.
but really, people like revert and pcfags who adore people like lady gaga especially, dont take me ALL THAT SERIOUSLY because while i may be looking down on you for listening to shit like her i may actually be playing paparazzi on my sound system.
